The Second Conditional compared to the First Conditional.

The second conditional uses the past simple after if, then 'would' and the infinitive:

if + past simple, ...would + infinitive

(We can use 'were' instead of 'was' with 'I' and 'he/she/it'. This is mostly done in formal writing).

It has two uses.

First, we can use it to talk about things in the future that are probably not going to be true. Maybe I'm imagining some dream for example.

o   If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house.(I probably won't win the lottery)

o   If I met the Queen of England, I would say hello.

o   She would travel all over the world if she were rich.

o   She would pass the exam if she ever studied.(She never studies, so this won't happen)

o   Second, we can use it to talk about something in the present which is impossible, because it's not true. Is that clear? Have a look at the examples:

o   If I had his number, I would call him. (I don't have his number now, so it's impossible for me to call him).

o   If I were you, I wouldn't go out with that man.

How is this different from the first conditional?

This kind of conditional sentence is different from the first conditional because this is a lot more unlikely.

For example (second conditional): If I had enough money I would buy a house with twenty bedrooms and a swimming pool (I'm probably not going to have this much money, it's just a dream, not very real)

But (first conditional): If I have enough money, I'll buy some new shoes (It's much more likely that I'll have enough money to buy some shoes)

What is the second conditional?:Explanation and examples.

There are two parts to a conditional sentence: the if-clause and the result-clause.
The 2nd (second) conditional sentence structure is called the present unreal conditional or hypothetical conditional.
You can also use this sentence structure to imagine a situation that is unlikely or impossible in the present.

Using the second conditional
ExampleExplanation
-If I were you, I would drive more carefully in the rain.-I am not you — this
 is unreal.
-Paula would be sad if Jan left.-Jan will not leave —
 that's not going
 to happen.
-If dogs had wings, they would be able to fly.-Dogs don't have
 wings —
 that's impossible.

TIPS TO HELP YOU REMEMBER NEW VOCABULARY.

Best 5 Ways for Remembering Words.

Below are 5 ways to enhance your memory for a specific word:

1. Use the words in a joke or make up a joke about the word and we have found that the more unusual the word is the easier it is to remember.
2. Turn the word into an acronym. Do this by assigning each letter to a word and try to put together a sentence like this.
3. Use the word in a rhyme. It is a known fact that us as humans remember songs and poems easier that’s why most of us will still remember songs from our childhood.
4. Associate the word with shapes or images for example a car, window or a stool even just anything that you can associate so when you think about that object you immediately think of the word as well.
